An MD at a major APAC bank once proposed scraping Yahoo Finance for equity and FX prices rather than licensing data properly. Writing for Sprada, thirty-year market data veteran Stuart Roberts argues that most compliance failures are not legal problems but cultural ones: the right conversation never happened before usage went live.
Roberts describes the familiar pattern. A desk moves fast, a feed goes live, and the people who understand the licensing implications find out months later, sometimes via an exchange audit. His prescription: not everyone needs to be an expert, but everyone needs to know who to ask before new data usage goes live.
Our view: culture needs infrastructure. When licensing, declarations and entitlements run through one system of record, "someone else checked it" becomes "the platform checked it." That is precisely the role compliance tooling and specialist managed services play for data providers and their customers.
